As a consultant Im often asked “Are you busy?” In pondering this question there are so manyassumptions one might make both in the answering and in the asking. Here just might be the intention behind this question.
Do you have time to take on more work?
Are you struggling to find work?
Am I bothering or interrupting you ?
Would you like to do something fun?
Am I important enough for you to listen to me right now?
What fills your days?
How many clients do you have?
Do you have more work than I do?
Is the economy affecting your business?
Are you hungry?
Do you want a job instead of being a consultant?
Would you like to partner on a project?
What do you do with all your time?
Are you retired?
Why are you shopping in the middle of the day?
I realize that the space in and around work is not well-defined. That how much of your calendar is “full”, how “busy” you are seems to be a measure somehow of the value you contribute, the money you make, the success of your business. I hesitate to say Im busy or not busy sometimes as Im not quite sure what it means to the other person. I work on and in my business lots. I also take time out to enjoy my garden, swim in the pool, go to the gym, visit my family, read and yes, go shopping. My life is full like others are. As a consultant I choose balance as a goal overall and if you see me out and about I am busy, or not busy depending on what you are really asking. I do know that I can always make time for fun, for new work, for a cup of coffee and some good dialogue.
